چکیده

We describe a spectroscopic survey designed to uncover an estimated ∼40 AM Canum Venaticorum (AM CVn) stars hiding in the photometric data base of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We have constructed a relatively small sample of about 1500 candidates based on a colour selection, which should contain the majority of all AM CVn binaries while remaining small enough that spectroscopic identification of the full sample is feasible. We present the first new AM CVn star discovered using this strategy, SDSS J080449.49+161624.8, the ultracompact binary nature of which is demonstrated using hightime-resolution spectroscopy obtained with the Magellan telescopes at Las Campanas Observatory, Chile. A kinematic ‘S-wave’ feature is observed on a period Porb = 44.5 ± 0.1 min, which we propose is the orbital period, although the present data cannot yet exclude its nearest

A search for the hidden population of AM CVn binaries in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

We present the latest results from a spectroscopic survey designed to uncover the hidden population of AM Canum Venaticorum (AM CVn) binaries in the photometric data base of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We selected ∼2000 candidates based on their photometric colours, a relatively small sample which is expected to contain the majority of all AM CVn binaries in the SDSS (expected to be ∼5...

The long-period AM CVn star SDSSJ155252.48+320150.9

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey has been instrumental in obtaining a homogeneous sample of the rare AM CVn stars: mass-transferring binary white dwarfs. As part of a campaign of spectroscopic follow-up on candidate AM CVn stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we have obtained time-resolved spectra of the g = 20.2 candidate SDSS J155252.48+320150.9 on the Very Large Telescope of the European Sou...

Five new outbursting AM CVn systems discovered by the Palomar Transient Factory

We present five new outbursting AM CVn systems and one candidate discovered as part of an ongoing search for such systems using the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF). This is the first large-area, systematic search for AM CVn systems using only large-amplitude photometric variability to select candidates. Three of the confirmed systems and the candidate system were discovered as part of the PTF t...

SDSS J124058.03−015919.2: A new AM CVn star with a 37-minute orbital period

We present high time resolution VLT spectroscopy of SDSS J124058.03−015919.2, a new helium-transferring binary star identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We measure an orbital period of 37.355± 0.002 minutes, confirming the AM CVn nature of the system. From the velocity amplitudes of the accretor and the accretion stream– disc impact, we derive a mass ratio q = 0.039± 0.010. Our spectral ...

Two new AM Canum Venaticorum binaries from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III

The AM Canum Venaticorum (AM CVn) binaries are a rare group of ultra-short period, masstransferring white dwarf binaries, some of which may be Type Ia supernova progenitors. More than a third of the total known population of AM CVn binaries have been discovered via the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Here, we discuss our search for new AM CVns in the SDSS spectroscopic data base, and present t...
